Where Do I Get it From?

Backgound • Family

My family has always been into some sort of creative hobbies throughout my life.  This has allowed me to me more accepting to new ideas and crafts.  Creating something interesting with supplies found around the house.

GRANDMA, Mom's Mom

My Grandmother knitted and crocheted. Usually sweaters or blankets at home, and many many smaller projects for on the road. Several times she would get off a plane somewhere with half a project done. Occasionally she did some small sewing for the family, but that was mostly from when my Mother was growing up.

GRANDMA, Dad's Mom

Grandma&us.gif (103035 bytes)Grandma didn't do a whole lot in hobbies that I know of. She got a much later start on her family than most people did in her time. She was an RN nurse which took up most of her early life and didn't start on her family till her late 30's or so. I do know that she did do some plastic canvas projects and may have dabbled in some minor knitting and crochet. She was the main caretaker in the family growing up and the crafty sewing providing was generally left to others in the family to do while she brought home the bacon.

AUNTS (Most of them)

Most of my Aunts do one form of craft or another... usually the knitting or some sewing. One of them that I know of for sure did some "candlewicking" (?) and still does cross stitch from time to time. Like my Mother, some of them are into the experimentation of different hobbies. Needlepoint, quilting, ceramics & jewelry making.

DAD

grandpa&dad.gif (51277 bytes)I can't say that my Father is all that crafty with crafts. He is very crafty and creative with computers and electronics. Must be where I get my computer savvy and ability to catch on to those technical applications that are available to us.

He spent 8 years in the Air Force, late 70's & most of the 80's, building his knowledge in electronics and the beginnings of the computer age.

Later he took a job for Boeing in Seattle building and testing, Test Equipment used in developing new planes.

Since then he has been back to school taking many course at the University of Washington and other outlets around the Seattle area that interest him. He always seems to be learning something interesting.

MOM

Long time friends - Mom and Nihla.JPG (85852 bytes)My Mother grew up to become a major FABRIHOLIC! Any interesting material and she just has to have SOME of it! She loves to sew anything as long as it is made with a material(s) that caught her eye. She made clothes for us growing up, not to mention the doll clothes that she made to match! By the time I had learned to sew in high school she had switched to Quilting. Bargello being her favorite. What an eye for color combination!

When I was really young she even tried her shutter finger at black & white photography including the developing processes. I look back now at the few pictures that are still around from that time and and can see the interest that she had in her subjects. Her 5 children!

Soon she moved on to Stained Glass and Glass Blowing. She ended up putting all stained glass fronts of the cupboard in one house we lived in. What a great way to increase the loveliness of an overworked room. Who says that the kitchen has to be bland and boring!

She has learned many painting techniques, walls not canvas. She loves to crackle finish, marble, whitewash and many more. She is the type of person that needs to have every room in the house be a completely different color.

Mom has taught me to be willing to try anything anything creative and not be afraid of the results, Good or Bad! Completely successful or "Test Run".
